Many local companies have seen significant changes in their local search ranks in recent weeks, and Google has now confirmed that the local algorithm has been updated.
Sterling Sky has dubbed this update ‘Vicinity,’ and it will be available between November 30th and December 8th. This is the most significant update to the local algorithm since Possum in 2016, and it has wreaked havoc on rankings.

What Is the Purpose of Vicinity?
The name of this update comes from the fact that it seems to prioritize proximity as a ranking criterion.
Although proximity has long been a key indication for local search results, companies may also optimize to rank distant from their real company location.
Google looks to be cracking down on this with the Vicinity upgrade, which will automatically make local search results more relevant to the user. Firms will have a better chance of ranking high in relevant local searches since they will be competing with fewer businesses that are farther away.
According to Sterling Sky’s study, the potential benefit of adding keywords to the company name of a Google Business Profile (GBP) listing has reduced after the modification.
Businesses who include keywords (inappropriately) in their names have witnessed a significant decline in search ranks, according to Sterling Sky research. This is likely to be a gain for organizations who have regularly obeyed Google’s keyword stuffing restrictions, as well as those that have dedicated work in combating name spam.

Changes in Local Search Rankings

Update on the Possum
Possum was the final major update to the local search algorithm before Vicinity. Possum was introduced in 2016 to help better filter the results in the Local Pack and Local Finder. Local SEOs speculated at the time that Possum was putting greater focus on proximity as a local ranking criteria, as well as reducing the impact of a website’s organic authority on Local Pack/Finder ranks.
